Oakland A's

Rob Manfred, tenth commissioner of Major League Baseball

2023

for the A's,

"This is it"

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

Like one of the Top 100 Songs on Billboard in the year 1979, Kenny Loggins This Is It, this 2023 is it for the Oakland A’s. We will know if they are staying in Oakland while they build their new planned baseball park at Howard Terminal. Or leaving Oakland for Las Vegas.

Or new owners buy the team and pledge to keep them in Oakland. Pick one. Those are the most likely scenarios. They will not build their new park at the same location (in my opinion the best) at the Oakland Coliseum; that is out of the question since Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has repeatedly stated that is not an option.

The A’s have played in Oakland since 1968 and won four World Series at the Oakland Coliseum. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers, since 1958, have won more World Series among all five California teams with six titles.

What scenarios are left?

1 - The current ownership of the A’s comes to an agreement with the city of Oakland to build Howard Terminal. Currently, there are no talks with Sheng Thao, the new mayor-elected of Oakland. How likely is that? Depends on who you talk to. The city of Oakland had agreed to publicly fund the transportation and infrastructure around the privately funded 35,000-seat, 55-acre ballpark at the Port of Oakland complex named Howard Terminal.

For a federal Megaprojects grant the city estimated Oakland’s portion would cost $366 million and the city requested $182 million, but the city’s application was not approved. The funding is not there. That is not good news for those that want the A’s to stay.

But the city of Oakland and the Oakland A’s do not have a binding contract. So far all is non-binding. Difference? What is a binding contract? A “binding contract” is any agreement that’s legally enforceable. That means if you sign a binding contract and don’t fulfill your end of the bargain, the other party can take you to court.

2 - Las Vegas, Nevada. The A’s have talked with multiple site owners, all adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip. Two sites primarily, one next to Circus Circus, owned by Phil Ruffin, and the other one at the current site of the Tropicana, recently purchased by Bally’s Corporation.

Bally’s corporation and Sinclair Broadcasting acquired a group of stations from Fox Regional Sports which currently have the broadcast rights for various major league baseball teams. For a while, the A’s were talking with Phil Ruffin regarding the Las Vegas Fairground site, (according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal), but that is not the case anymore. It seems as of today, the Review-Journal confirmed the A’s have the Tropicana site as their favorite. Looks like the A’s have picked their site.

3 – The Oakland A’s get an offer from a new owner to buy the team. Although the A’s are not officially for sale, there are two teams currently for sale, the Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Angels. Since 2005 Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have expressed their interest for buying the A’s and keeping them in Oakland but the A’s current ownership was not interested. Now Lacob and Gruber are interested in the Los Angeles Angels, but in the world of business, there are always surprises. So for those that want to keep the A’s in Oakland, it would be very good news that a new owner buys the team.

The Oakland Athletics will have their relocation fee waived if they decide to move to Las Vegas, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says 2023 is a big year when it comes to the future of the franchise. Yes indeed, This Is It. 2023 is here. Fish or cut bait.

San Francisco 49ers 41

Seattle Seahawks 23

Saturday, January 14, 2023

San Francisco 49ers Deebo Samuel at the end of a 74-yard pass from Brock Purdy against the Seattle Seahawks.

Another Cold, Wet Pacific Salmon-slap for Pete Carroll

In a predictably physical, no-nonsense game, Brock Purdy and the 49ers unleashed their weaponry on both sides of the ball in the second half to bludgeon Seattle, 41-23.

The first big play of the game was a sack by DT Arik Armstead which forced a Seattle punt on their first possession. With OT Aaron Banks back to help, the O-Line gave Purdy time to throw and Deebo Samuel to run with gusto, and the Niners moved in for an early FG and a 3-0 lead.

The 49er defense, with a key tackle by Tashaun Gipson Sr., then stopped Seattle. Christian McCaffery (CMC) promptly ran for 66 yards, and after a 19-yard pass to Elijah Mitchell, Brock hit CMC with a TD pass to make it 10-0 as the 1st Quarter ended.

The hearty 49er fans were feeling good, but Seattle would come back with a touchdown to make it 10-7 before the 49ers, on Purdy runs and passes to Kittle and CMC, kicked a field goal to make it 13-7, SF.

However, Seahawk receivers are always dangerous, and Metcalf and Lockett did not disappoint, as Metcalf scored to make it 14-13, Seattle. A Robbie Gould FG made it 16-14, SF, but a 56-yard Seattle FG made it 17-16, Seattle, at half-time, a surprise after the rocket-launched start of the 49ers. What would be next?

The 49ers received, and it was Kittle for 23 yards and then a heapin' helpin' of CMC runs. Purdy was pushed into the end zone from the one-yard line and the 49ers retook the lead, 23-17. After SF kicked off, Seattle moved downfield, but a sack on QB Geno Smith by DE Charles Omenihu caused a fumble, recovered by Nick Bosa, at 2:25 of the 3rd Q, and the 3rd Q ended with SF up 23-17.

After the fumble recovery, Purdy hit "Mr. Clutch" Jauan Jennings for 32 yards to the 8-yard line, then Mitchell for a TD. With a successful

2-point conversion on a pass to George Kittle, who had a big game, it was now 31-17, SF.

The Niners kicked off and Seattle reverted to their penalty-prone selves and were forced to punt. It was then time for a 74-yard TD pass to Deebo, whose fellow receiver Brandon Aiyuk led the way with a key block, and, voila, the score was suddenly 38-17, SF.

After the 49ers kicked, Deommodore Lenoir, #38, intercepted Smith. A first-down pass to Mr. Clutch and runs by Mitchell and CMC led to another Robbie Gould FG and a 41-17 SF lead. After the 49ers kicked off, former Toledo Rocket Samuel Womack came in to help on defense and Omenihu sacked Smith, but, alas, Seattle scored to make the score 41-23, as their 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Final score: San Francisco 49ers 41, Seattle Seahawks 23

Next up: San Francisco will face the winner of Monday night's Dallas Cowboys vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday, January 22,

Letters to the Editor

68,323: The Answers are Obvious

On Friday night, the Warriors won in front of the largest crowd in NBA history, 68,323, in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio. The W's scored 144 points and won by more than 30.

Conclusions: The Warriors should buy the A's and the Oakland Coliseum, dome the Coliseum, and have some Warriors "away" games there. If that's what is needed for the W's to win games, then go get us a domed arena.

Draymond was right -- the game and ambience had a Final Four feel to it. The Dubs new domed stadium could host college tournaments and all types of other events in the rejuvenated Coliseum -- from "Day on the Green" festivals to major soccer contests to Monster Trucks and community opportunities. AND BASEBALL!

68,323 is a large number. A new domed stadium might be for 40,000, and that's a lot of tickets - and that's just for basketball!

Plus, build the A's into the team so many baseball fans yearn for and deserve, and the fans will be there. With a dome, a good team, available land, and apparently no other workable ideas, this is the way to go! Warriors, A's, Baseball, Oakland and the entire East Bay and beyond, all WIN! And, Joe and Peter, you might even land a USFL team!

It's so easy when you already know the answer!

Sports Today! -- A Multi-Faceted Publication

I was flippin' around the dial a few nights ago and there was the USF/St. Mary's Basketball game! A year ago, not only would I have not cared about it, but the players' and coaches' names certainly

would not have registered with me at all.

Now, after the weekly comprehensive coverage of all NorCal colleges in Sports Today, although I didn't have a horse in that particular race, the coaches, schools and players were all familiar. Your 'zine is a real educational resource for sports fans, with the depth of your expertly written articles, the usual fun and frolic and the wide variety of professional sports covered in every issue.

Monday Mourning

by Andy Dolich

“You’re Fired” was the signature line from the 45th President of the United States and star of “The Apprentice.” It’s also the dreaded theme line for Black Monday. No other sport comes close to the NFL’s season-ending house cleaning of coaches, GMs and other team player personnel staff before or after the last game of the season.

By Monday, January 9th, the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule, the Arizona Cardinals Kliff Kingsbury, and the Houston Texans Lovie Smith. Frank Reich of the Indy Colts went early on November 7, and the Denver Broncos' Nathanial Hackett were both told to clean out their desks, lockers, vacate their V.I.P. parking spaces and turn in the playbooks they helped write and coach from.

This group was told, “Thanks for your combined record of 26-74 this past season. You’re Fired.”

In addition, a number of coordinators, assistant coaches and other football personnel staff were told that they had received the ultimate challenge flag and after further review, they no longer had jobs.

No matter how tough it is to lose a big time coaching job, I think it’s about time to erase the word “Fired” from the vocabulary of professional and big time college sports. Can you just say “WAMAWU” – "We Are Moving Ahead Without You.”

Here’s why. In the real world which most of us inhabit, when you lose your job there is usually a security person or HR representative with a cardboard box telling you to pack up your desk, hand in your cell phone, laptop, key card and your dignity as you are shown the door at team headquarters or any other office. These days you can also add the opportunity to be fired digitally and I don’t mean the middle finger.

The vast majority of people who lose their jobs don’t necessarily know where the next paycheck is coming from but they know that the discussion with the spouse/family isn’t going to have a happy ending with a fairy godmother showing up waving a big fat career-saving severance check.

The NFL’s Black Monday and other high level sports job terminations aren’t close to the definition of Fired that many real life workers have to deal with. In the big time world of sports the terminees have the following safety nets which don’t come close to defining Fired.

Contracts:

Most employees don’t have guaranteed contracts or agents who have negotiated iron clad deals on their behalf. Nothing is more comforting than knowing you have a few years of income coming your way even though you no longer have a job.

Pensions:

Even if you never work again almost all player personnel people are covered by league-wide pension plans. As we know, most businesses are seeing deep cutbacks or no pension plans at all for their rank and file employees.

Immediate Rehire:

“Hi, I’m (coach) Fired” by the (team) and I was out of a job for an incredibly stressful seven days before being rehired by (team).

Media Glare

The regular working person doesn’t have to deal with a bunch of media hounds outside their house wondering what they’ll do next. For the big time names this can actually help keep them in the public eye on the way to their next job.

Donald Trump doesn’t currently own a pro football franchise. Walt Michaels was the last coach to hear Trump’s signature “You’re Fired” when Trump cashiered him in 1986 as coach of his USFL New Jersey Generals. The entire league was fired later in 1986.

Just a minor point of difference between job security and not. New England head coach Bill Belichick will be back for his 24th year with the Patriots.

Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119

Title: Make Sense of the Madness:

The Evolving Business of College Athletics

Instructor -- Andy Dolich

The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and

in the future?

This course examines the business of college sports past,

present and future.

Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports

Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson

Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher

Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner

Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun

Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved

constituencies.

Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.

Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

From Another Era, Babe Ruth

On a sunny July day in Washington, the Yankees were in Griffith Stadium, playing a doubleheader against the Senators. In the fourth inning of the first game, before 24,000 fans, the home team’s Joe Judge swung his bat; the ball sailed just over the right-field line, heading toward the bleachers in foul territory.

Racing to make the catch, Babe Ruth slammed into a concrete wall and was knocked unconscious. He was already a national phenomenon, already the best-paid major league player there had ever been. As he lay unconscious on the field, the Yankees’ trainer, Doc Woods, rushed to him with a first-aid kit and poured icy water onto his face.

Ruth was out for five anxiety-producing minutes. The District of Columbia police (led by one Captain Doyle) kept the curious and concerned at bay. When the Babe finally opened his eyes, the Yankees’ manager, Miller Huggins, offered to take him out, but Ruth would not hear of it. Nowadays a player so injured would be taken to a hospital for neurological tests, but this was 1924.

Ruth went back into the game, showing a conspicuous limp (he had damaged his left hip) as he recorded two more hits, drawing louder cheers than usual, for his fortitude, as he rounded the bases. He even kept playing through the second game.

not including the title)

Brady Could Again Contribute

To Interesting Media Hype

The T. Buff question was going to be, “Who is the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl?”

Ben Roethlesberger (23) is the answer. Brock Purdy could very well win that notoriety. If Brady can get by Dallas, next week’s game would be a matchup between a quarterback that

was the third youngest (24) quarterback and the oldest (43) quarterback to have won the Super Bowl. Somewhat prematurely, some people are referring to Purdy

as the next Tom Brady.

It’s the waxing star vs. the waning star.

9ers & Dubs Ball

The 9ers and The Kid

and The Dubs

by Howard Pearlstein

Looks like the title of Baby-Faced Assassin has moved from the Dubs to the 9ers. The tag doesn’t fit Steph anymore, now a full-grown man with a beard and a wife and kids and etc. Steph is still seriously dangerous on the court and able to put an end to opponents’ hopes and do it on defense as well as offense, but maybe he’s become something more like what Fats Waller would call: Killer Diller.

Purdy's new and as they say, “has a lot to learn,” although spending the first half of the rookie year facing the NFL’s most powerful defense every week as QB for the next opponent, he learned as much from them as they were practicing to learn about him. Which is why they already knew him when he got to start.

And ok, maybe some of his power comes from there having been a lack of film on him, something upcoming playoff opponents will work to rectify as much as possible, but still, maybe not. Whichever, we’ll find out soon enough.

Which raises the question no one wants to ask: If we have a very good QB, still learning but with an extraordinarily fast learning curve, why do we need Trey Lance? Other than trying to justify all the draft trades we gave away to get him.

Because Trey’s gonna have to do the same thing Purdy is already doing. Learn hard lessons on the field in games. And do we want, can we stand another year of "rookie time" when things are looking to be as good as it gets.

A lot of people are looking to pick on Purdy and find fault, ("Well, he SEEMS good so far BUT..."), maybe because they're feeling the cost of that passel of high draft picks, except that Shanahan, the man who DID pay that price seems quite happy to find he has a QB who can be all that and a Super Bowl Trophy too.

My unasked-for suggestion: Trade Trey for a couple of high draft picks and ask Jimmy G to stay on as an understudy and add to Griese's coaching input. He's 32 with a history of injuries, and he knows the system and we know he's got the skill and toughness the position needs.

Maybe Trey Lance will turn out to be another Mahomes (although Steve Young already compared Purdy to that KC phenom) or just another NFL fairy tale. But it makes sense to clear to roster and that's the only way that makes sense, painful though it may be, fair to both Purdy and Trey.

Finally, correction from my mistake last week about the mojo-guided blocked-shot play. Not the Pistons, but Atlanta.

The Play:  The Warriors were down three with 9.1 seconds left when Kerr predictably drew up a play for Klay. When his shot from the left corner came up short, Poole got the offensive rebound and raced back to the 3-point line only to have his shot blocked. Attempting to swat the ball away, the Hawks instead hit it to Donte DiVincenzo who knocked down a 29-footer to tie the game at 121.

(A touch of old-timers’ disease going on there – nodding off in the good parts after DVR-ing the game while working late and then watching it starting around midnight. Glad to have it recorded so I can go back and see what I might have missed. Conflating it with the same mini-nap in the next game.)

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Steve Young -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

The annual dental convention in Anaheim that I’ve been going to has been a great place to get athlete autographs. There’s a vendor there who always hires athletes to sign autographs for customers who purchase their products. One year they had former 49er Quarterback Steve Young available. After making the required purchase the vendor gave me a white panel football and I got in line to meet Steve Young. From the moment he showed up he was all smiles. I asked him what keeps him busy these days and he replied, “Staying active and healthy.” He placed a huge signature on my football and I left happy.

Justice Moves Past Nash As Broncos

Cruise Past Pacific, 92-81

STOCKTON, Calif. – Keshawn Justice once again was the man of the hour for Santa Clara men's basketball, tallying his second-straight game of 20 or more points with a career-high tying 26 points on 6-of-15 shooting from 3-point range as the Broncos took care of Pacific on the road with a 92-81 victory on Saturday evening.

Justice, coming off a 22-point outing against No. 9 Gonzaga, continued to solidify himself as one of the premier players in program history with his six treys moving him ahead of Steve Nash for the third most 3-pointers made. He also moved up to 17th on the school's all-time scoring list, surpassing Bud Ogden with 1,444 points.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods." By Charlie Silvera with Dave Newhouse (Author).

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
